Reflections on Impermanence
From aerial views of glaciers to intimate close-ups of floating ice, this exhibition reveals the beauty and austerity of the Arctic in its continual transformation. In recent years, during several photographic journeys to Greenland and Svalbard, I experienced a profound sense of awe and reverence for nature. I remember the feeling of gratitude and privilege of being in these extraordinary places. They gave me a deeper perspective on what truly matters and helped me see beauty in transience and renewal. I remember moments of intense quiet and peace in this vast wilderness, of feeling welcomed as a part of it - a tiny, joyful presence in an immense landscape. These are moments to cherish.

I remember the colours of the ice changing with the light, from grey-green to turquoise, with every shade of blue in between. I remember the snow shifting from cool blue in the morning to warm gold and soft pink in the evening. I remember the sky changing from clear, brilliant blue with a low sun and long shadows to milky white in dense fog, or almost black above dark water and beneath heavy clouds. I remember the calm sea reflecting snow-covered mountains, only to become rough and stormy, before falling quiet once again. But I also remember a deep sadness, knowing that there are changes on a different scale - changes that do not follow a natural cycle and may be irreversible.

If this exhibition encourages reflection on these changes and care about the choices we make each day to protect the natural world, it will be the greatest success I could hope for.

FROZEN RIVER

]]>The Adventdalen River near Longyearbyen freezes in winter, and most of it is covered by snow. As the frozen water expands, windswept blue mounds emerge from the otherwise flat, white valley. The clear glacial ice cracks into intricate abstract patterns, revealing unexpected shapes and textures beneath its transparent surface. Black stones trapped within the ice become part of the river's story, suspended in time.

]]>Sandstone at Spittal Beach, Northumberland, is a source of fascination for many photographers, myself included. Each time I visit at low tide, I admire the valleys, gorges, curves and layers, and the little pools of water that create a world in itself. The movement of sand with the ebb and flow of the tide, the changing light and the waves stroking the stones all create endless impressions of these ancient rocks.

Tribute to Wilhelmina Barns-Graham

]]>These photographs were taken in Vatnajökull National Park in Iceland, nearly seventy years after Wilhelmina Barns-Graham made her celebrated drawings and paintings of the Grindelwald Glacier in Switzerland. Although they depict a different glacier in a different country, they helped me better understand and appreciate her remarkable work. When I visited the Inspirational Journeys exhibition at the Granary Gallery in Berwick-upon-Tweed, I was immediately drawn to her distinctive, almost abstract interpretation of the landscape. I responded particularly strongly to her images of the glacier, whose structure, colour and vitality she captured so vividly. Looking at my own photographs, I am reminded of the same qualities that fascinated Barns-Graham: the intricate textures of the ice, its subtle colours and constantly changing forms. Glaciers possess an extraordinary combination of strength and fragility, and I feel that both her paintings and these photographs reflect something of that dual nature. Hoffellsjökull lagoon

]]>These photographs were taken at Hoffellsjökull lagoon in Iceland on 2 March 2020, in extraordinary light. Soft sunlight, fog, cloud, patches of blue sky and frequent snow showers alternated throughout the day, transforming the landscape from one moment to the next.
The lagoon was frozen, allowing us to walk among the large icebergs that had calved from the glacier and were now blanketed in fresh snow. Some contained holes, tunnels and small caves, revealing ice of a vivid sapphire blue beneath the white surface. With nobody else around, it felt as though we were on another planet.

They explore the way light transforms interior spaces, revealing unexpected shapes, textures and architectural details. Colour has been used creatively to emphasise the changing relationship between light, form and space.

Breiðamerkurjökull and Jökulsárlón

]]>Breiðamerkurjökull is one of the southern outlet glaciers of the vast Vatnajökull ice cap in south-east Iceland. As the glacier has retreated over the past century, it has given rise to Jökulsárlón, a glacial lagoon where icebergs continually calve from the glacier and drift through the water before eventually reaching the sea via the short river Jökulsá.
I visited Breiðamerkurjökull in a range of weather conditions: beneath overcast skies, in bright sunshine, and during an exceptionally windy day. Each visit revealed a different landscape. The changing light transformed the glacier's subtle blues, greens, whites and greys, while the shifting weather altered both the mood of the ice and the character of the lagoon. These photographs explore how the same place can appear remarkably different as light, colour and atmosphere continually reshape the scene.

SUN IN THE GRASS

]]>After many years living in cities, I now have a home in the countryside, close to the North Sea in England. My dream of living beside a wildflower meadow slowly began to come true when my husband and I decided not to mow the grass and see what would appear. To our delight, the first surprise came one May day when we discovered a Northern Marsh orchid in flower. Looking more closely, we found more orchids, including Common Spotted ones, and began collecting and spreading their seeds around the garden. Over the years, the meadow has been transformed, with hundreds of orchids, natural hybrids and many other wildflowers appearing. From spring onwards, the meadow changes constantly. Dandelions, daisies, Cuckoo Flowers, buttercups, clovers and many other plants provide colour and nourishment for butterflies, bees and other insects. Birds feed among the flowers, and frogs have made their home in the long grass.
What began as an experiment has become a small haven for wildlife and a constant source of fascination. Every year brings new discoveries and a deeper appreciation of the biodiversity that can flourish when nature is given space. As the sun sets, the meadow glows with warm orange and red tones. Insects bask in the fading light, and I find endless fascination in capturing these small moments with my camera. I wrote about this project in the November 2021 special environmental issue of ICM Photography Magazine, created to raise awareness of environmental concerns alongside the COP26 Climate Change Conference in Glasgow.

Treasures hidden in ice

]]>Ice and light are creating a whole world of ever-changing ephemeral images. This is partially due to three-dimensionality of the caves’ walls and the directional light coming through various holes, big and small. In addition, the different ages of the glacier layers, and so their colour and structure, make the photographic experience very exciting.
